There are few things

MORE IMPORTANT than the food we eat

We’re committed to helping you make healthier choices for a happy, healthy lifestyle.

Good health

This means making sure that healthier options are available, working behind the scenes to remove fat, salt and sugar and add more fruit and veg to our food, lowering the calories of some of our products, and making it simpler to identify healthier choices with clear labelling. You’ll also find healthy recipes with nutritional information in our publications and online.

Small changes,
BIG impact

At Waitrose, we’re always looking for ways to make good food even better. Here are some of the things we’re doing to help you make healthy choices.

  • We’re committed to meeting the Government's reformulation targets – in practice, that’s making products healthier by reducing calories, fat, sugar and salt without compromising on quality or taste.

  • We’ve been removing sugar from many of our products since 2015 – for example, we’ve cut sugar in our own-brand cereals by 22% on average and removed 716 tonnes of sugar a year from our customers’ baskets.

  • We’re on track to meet our salt and calories targets by December 2024: 86% of products already meet the salt targets and 93% meet calorie targets.

  • We’re rated as being ‘on the road to success’ by the Food Foundation for our efforts to help our customers eat more veg thanks to our decision to increase the amount of vegetables in our ready meals.

  • We've set a target to increase the amount of healthy food and drinks we sell – aiming for 65% as a proportion of total own-label sales based on our Good Health criteria.
  • We stock more than 1,600 Good Health products – clearly labelled to help customers find foods with less refined sugar, more wholegrains and fibre, less meat protein, and less saturated fat.

  • Our myWaitrose members with a Vitality health or life insurance plan can claim up to 25% cashback on Waitrose products with the Good Health logo. You can find out more here.

  • In January 2021 we launched the Holistic Living range, which brings together a number of different health-focused products to support a balanced lifestyle. These include:

Gut Health – the UK’s first own-label range with a certified gut health claim

Thrive – focusing on fresh ingredients and perfect portion sizing

PlantLiving and GoVeggie – designed for those looking for easy ways to get more plant protein

“HELPING customers to make healthy choices is something I truly believe in. I’m really PASSIONATE about the role that our diets can play in helping us to live HAPPY, HEALTHY lives.”

So passionate in fact, that she’s made it her mission to help improve our health offering to customers over her 13 years working as a nutritionist at Waitrose. “I advise the Waitrose product team on ways to make products healthier by adding more veg or reducing sugar, calories and salt. No two days are the same – sort of like a healthy, balanced diet!”

Outside of work, Joanne has an equally balanced approach to life and loves to bake at home with her two daughters. “Nothing is off limits – it’s all about eating the biggest variety of delicious, nutritious foods you can find. My top tip is to add more veg to your diet – it’s one of the easiest things you can do to improve the balance of what you eat.”
