Prawns are meaty crustaceans with a distinctive sweetness. They’re blue-grey when raw, and turn a beautiful pink colour after just a few minutes of cooking. We sell pre-packed raw king prawns and raw shell-on tiger prawns – named for their striped tail – as well as a range of ready-to-eat cooked prawns. You’ll find a variety of raw and cooked, peeled and unpeeled prawns on our fish counters in store, too.
How to cook prawns
Use ready-cooked prawns in prawn cocktails, salads or sandwiches, or stirred into pasta just before serving.
Fry
To fry prawns, heat a little oil in a frying pan. Fry peeled prawns for 2–3 minutes and shell-on prawns for 5–6 minutes, until they turn pink.
Grill
Large shell–on prawns such as tiger prawns are delicious grilled. Place them on a baking tray and brush with a little butter – garlic butter works well. Cook under a preheated grill for 5–8 minutes, until they turn pink.
BBQ
Preheat the barbecue to medium-high. Add large shell-on prawns, such as tiger prawns, and cook for 5–8 minutes, until they turn pink.
